My name is Adalberto Ruiz. There are many reasons why I am a unique individual, and there are many more reasons why I chose to chase and dive deeper into the field of generalized physical and digital security. To start off, I originally fell in love with security on the digital side of things. Whether this be computer networking, digital and physical disk analysis, or cyber security, I enjoyed every minute of it. After enjoying such named technological based subjects and topics, I decided to pursue a degree within that field, Network Security. Upon joining the University of Advancing Technology and enrolling into the Network Security degree, I discovered that overall security isn’t only digital based; it can also be heavily physical based. I initially recognized this throughout my introductions to generalized security; however, I realized how much of a bigger role it played into security reaching my one year tenure at the University of Advancing Technology. This was approximately around the time when I began my security career at one of Amazon’s corporate office spaces. In December of 2019, I began my career at Amazon as a Security Video Analyst. While in the role, I got introduced to various physical security devices such as alarm systems, camera systems, motion detection systems, and even intrusion detection systems. Initially, I began the career as a “top performer” of my shift; however, I considered being considered a “top performer” within my current role not to be sufficient enough. In my opinion, being a “top performer” in any role, even outside of generalized security, means being a master at the job function. Being a master by my definition is being the best and bringing others to your level. While I found myself, metric wise, greatly outperforming my other team mates, I still did not see success within my metrics. This is when I realized being a top performer and teaching others how to reach your level is what makes you into a great leader. This is when I designated myself to be the shift’s first and only learning ambassador where I held routine weekly classes surrounding how to improve your performance metrics and rise to the top as myself. After three months of taking upon the initiative of becoming the shift’s designated learning ambassador, I began seeing improvements throughout my entire team. From the point of me beginning the courses, to the three month mark of nearly completing my courses, my team saw a statistical improvement of 25% on a month-by-month basis. This led me onto another efficiency project, “Auto-Deploy.” Auto-Deploy was the major project which led me to where I am today. Using my digital security background in Network Security, I took upon the hardship of developing the application Auto-Deploy. The goal of Auto-Deploy was to improve the shifts efficiency metrics by auto deploying tools within a matter of seconds to reduce the individual searching for the needed applications. This project yet again improved our efficiency metrics by 15%-25% on a month by month basis. Both of these projects worked out so well, I was promoted to an Assistant Crisis Manager and moved to Amazon’s Global Security Operations Center after a year. This is where I stand today, out in the security field, leading an amazing team of digital security and physical security experts. My end goal is to be a generalized security subject matter expert for Amazon regardless how many years of practice it takes. This is who I am; I am Adalberto Ruiz.
